A brighter shade starts with the right diagnosis

Bleaching can lighten natural tooth color, but it does not solve every kind of discoloration. An examination helps distinguish surface staining, changes within a tooth, and color differences involving crowns, fillings, or other dental work.

GREENWICH POINT DENTAL

Find out what is causing the color

Tell your dentist whether the change affects one tooth or your whole smile and whether it followed an injury. Mention sensitivity, discomfort, or recent dental treatment. A single darkening tooth deserves evaluation rather than automatic bleaching. Cleaning may address some external stain, while other concerns call for a different discussion. The cause matters more than choosing the strongest product.

Compare realistic options and tradeoffs

Professionally supervised whitening may involve treatment in an office or a prescribed home approach. Suitability depends on the condition of your teeth and gums. Temporary sensitivity or gum irritation can occur, and existing restorations do not whiten like natural enamel. If visible fillings or crowns are present, discuss the likely color match before starting and before replacing any dental work.

Plan around comfort and maintenance

Ask how to use the recommended product, when to pause, and which symptoms should prompt a call. More frequent or longer application is not a reliable shortcut. Avoid improvised acidic or abrasive whitening mixtures. Discuss what degree of change is realistic for your starting shade and how you will judge the result together. Whitening is elective, so there is room to make an unhurried decision.

GOOD QUESTIONS

A little more clarity.

Will bleaching make a crown lighter?

No. Whitening products act on natural teeth and do not predictably change a crown's shade. Your dentist can discuss whether whitening would create a noticeable mismatch with existing restorations.
