A gentle routine, done thoroughly

Brushing works best when it is both consistent and comfortable. The goal is to clean every tooth surface with fluoride toothpaste, without turning extra pressure into a substitute for attention to the places you usually miss.

GREENWICH POINT DENTAL

Follow a route through your mouth

Brush twice daily for two minutes with a soft-bristled brush. Work around the outside, inside, and chewing surfaces in a repeatable order. Angle the bristles toward the gumline and use gentle movements. A timer can help, but time alone does not ensure coverage. Think about the back molars and inner surfaces of the front teeth, which are easy to hurry past.

Let comfort guide adjustments

If brushing hurts, the answer is not simply to press harder or stop cleaning the area. Ask your dentist to check sensitivity, bleeding, or a sore spot. Bring your brush or describe its size and setting so the team can suggest a practical adjustment. A smaller head, easier handle, or powered brush may make the routine more manageable for some people.

Pair brushing with the care it cannot replace

Toothbrush bristles do not thoroughly reach every space between teeth. Add an appropriate interdental cleaning method and ask for help around bridges or orthodontic appliances. Professional assessment is still needed even when your teeth look clean. At your next visit, ask which area needs more attention and have the technique demonstrated in your own mouth rather than relying only on a diagram.

GOOD QUESTIONS

A little more clarity.

Does harder brushing remove more plaque?

Hard scrubbing can injure gums and wear tooth surfaces. Use gentle pressure and a soft brush. If areas remain difficult to clean, ask for technique advice and a tool that fits the space.
