Bleeding gums deserve a closer look

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums, often related to plaque buildup. Periodontitis is a more advanced condition involving the tissues and bone that support teeth. The distinction matters because the treatment and ongoing maintenance needs are different.

GREENWICH POINT DENTAL

Notice more than pain

Gum disease can develop without obvious pain. Bleeding during cleaning, persistent bad breath, recession, loose teeth, or a change in the bite should be mentioned at a visit. Do not assume that stopping flossing will solve bleeding. A dentist can assess gum measurements, inflammation, and supporting structures, using imaging when needed to understand whether there has been bone loss.

Understand the purpose of treatment

Care may begin with professional removal of deposits and help with daily cleaning. Deeper disease may need additional periodontal treatment or referral. Ask which areas are involved, how the diagnosis was made, and how progress will be assessed. The goal is not merely a cleaner-looking smile but control of disease and protection of the structures that keep your teeth stable.

Make maintenance specific to your mouth

Tell the team if recommended tools are difficult to use, and ask for a demonstration around crowded teeth, bridges, or implants. Discuss smoking, diabetes, and other relevant health factors without making changes to prescribed medicines yourself. Follow-up frequency should reflect your condition. If bleeding or soreness continues between visits, ask for advice rather than waiting for the next scheduled cleaning to mention it.

GOOD QUESTIONS

A little more clarity.

Can gingivitis improve?

Plaque-related gingivitis can often improve with effective daily cleaning and professional care. An examination is needed to determine whether the problem is limited to the gums or includes deeper supporting-tissue damage.
