Make allergies part of the conversation

A known or suspected latex allergy belongs in your dental history before treatment begins. Sharing the details early gives the team time to review materials and plan appropriate precautions instead of discovering a concern after you are already in the chair.

GREENWICH POINT DENTAL

Explain what happened

Natural rubber latex can trigger allergic reactions, including serious immediate reactions. Other skin irritation around gloves or dental materials may have a different cause. Describe the product involved, how quickly symptoms appeared, and whether you experienced itching, rash, swelling, wheezing, or faintness. A previous mild reaction does not reliably predict the severity of a future one, so avoid testing your tolerance yourself.

Plan before the appointment

Tell the office when scheduling and remind the clinical team on arrival. Bring any evaluation from your physician or allergist, along with your medication list and the emergency plan they have provided. Ask whether the planned procedure involves materials containing natural rubber latex. Gloves are only one possible exposure; other supplies also deserve review. A material check is more useful than assuming a room or product is entirely latex-free.

Know when to seek medical help

If an allergy has not been confirmed, discuss evaluation with a medical professional. During treatment, report new symptoms immediately so the team can respond. Sudden throat or tongue swelling, difficulty breathing, or signs of a severe allergic reaction require emergency medical assistance. After a suspected reaction, write down the timing and contact the treating clinicians; accurate details can guide safer planning for future visits.

GOOD QUESTIONS

A little more clarity.

Should I mention a reaction that happened years ago?

Yes. Include older reactions even if you have not had another episode. The team can help identify which details or medical records would be useful before treatment.
