What we handle in our office
Oral and maxillofacial surgery covers procedures involving the teeth, jaws and surrounding structures. At Greenwich Point Dental, the great majority of that work happens right here: routine and surgical extractions, wisdom teeth removal, dental implant placement and other oral surgery.
Dr. Whitlow’s advanced implant training through the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, along with his experience in oral surgery, is what allows the practice to keep this care in-house.
Why it matters to you
Keeping surgery in the office means fewer appointments in unfamiliar places, no waiting on a specialist’s schedule and a team that already knows your history. The dentist who plans your treatment is the one who carries it out and sees you afterward, which improves continuity of care and makes the whole process more convenient.
It also means questions about cost, sedation and recovery are answered in one place, by people you already know.
When a specialist is involved
In certain unique cases, such as complex jaw conditions, facial trauma or a medical history that calls for hospital-based care, our dentists may decide to refer to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. We do this only when it is absolutely necessary, and we coordinate the referral, share your records and stay involved in your care afterward.
Seek emergency medical help right away for difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading swelling, uncontrolled bleeding or major facial injury. Those situations should not wait for a dental appointment.

Will I be sent elsewhere for an extraction or implant?
Usually not. We handle most extractions, oral surgery and implant placement in our office. A referral happens only in certain unique cases where our dentists decide a specialist is absolutely necessary.
How should I prepare for a surgical visit?
Bring your medical history, a list of medications and allergies, and any questions about sedation, eating, activity and time off work. We will give you written aftercare instructions and a way to reach us if you have a concern after your procedure.
