Find a way between teeth that works for you

Cleaning between teeth is easier to maintain when the tool fits both the space and your hands. String floss is one option, and there are several ways to use it. A useful choice lets you clean consistently without forcing material through a contact or cutting into the gums.

GREENWICH POINT DENTAL

Compare the feel and access

Waxed floss, unwaxed floss, and broader dental tape feel different as they move between teeth. A holder may help if wrapping floss around your fingers is awkward. Rather than choosing by packaging alone, describe where you struggle. Ask the hygienist to watch your technique and recommend a format that reaches the surface while remaining comfortable to control.

Work around dental treatment

Bridges, orthodontic appliances, and other restorations can create spaces that ordinary floss cannot approach in the usual way. A threader or another interdental tool may help, depending on the design. Ask for a demonstration around your actual restoration. A tool that suits one space may not fit another, and forcing it is not the solution to resistance or repeated catching.

Use problems as feedback

Clean between teeth daily and use gentle, controlled movements against the tooth rather than snapping floss into the gum. If floss repeatedly shreds at one point, a contact catches food, or bleeding persists, arrange an assessment. These findings may reflect technique or a condition that deserves attention. Keep a small sample or photograph of the tool you use so the team can give specific advice.

GOOD QUESTIONS

A little more clarity.

Is the best floss the one that slides through most easily?

Ease matters, but so does contacting the surfaces you intend to clean. Ask for help checking your technique and whether a different tool would work better in wider spaces or around dental work.
