A smile decision with long-term considerations

Veneers cover the front surfaces of selected teeth to change features such as shape or color. They can be useful in suitable cases, but the decision deserves more than choosing a photograph you like. Healthy foundations, your bite, and the amount of tooth preparation all matter.

GREENWICH POINT DENTAL

Define the change you want

Point out specific concerns: a chipped edge, uneven shape, a space, or color that bothers you. Ask whether whitening, bonding, orthodontic care, or another approach could address the same concern. The dentist should evaluate teeth and gums before recommending cosmetic treatment. A veneer cannot substitute for treating active decay or gum disease, and not every tooth needs the same solution.

Discuss material and preparation

Porcelain and composite approaches have different characteristics. Ask how much enamel would be removed, how reversible the proposed treatment is, and how the result would be planned. Many veneer treatments involve permanent changes to tooth structure. Review your bite and any grinding habits because they may affect the recommendation. Discuss the proposed number of teeth and why that number is needed for your goals.

Plan for living with the result

Veneers require cleaning and professional review, and they can chip or need replacement. Ask how you should clean their edges, what habits may damage them, and how a future repair would be approached. Consider the appearance in ordinary conversation, not only in a close-up smile photograph. A useful consultation makes room for questions about comfort, shade, shape, costs, and future maintenance before you commit.

GOOD QUESTIONS

A little more clarity.

Will veneers last for the rest of my life?

No restoration comes with that certainty. Longevity varies with the tooth, material, bite, habits, and care. Discuss the possibility of repair or replacement as part of the original decision.
