Why symptoms are not a reliable guide
Early decay may cause no pain. The dentist considers examination findings and, when indicated, dental images to identify areas that are hard to see directly. A spot's color alone does not establish whether it needs a filling. Ask to be shown the area and to hear why monitoring, preventive treatment, or a restoration is being recommended for that particular tooth.
Address the conditions behind it
If a cavity is treated, ask what may have contributed and what you can change. Daily cleaning, fluoride, frequent sugar exposure, and dry mouth may all be relevant. A prevention plan should be practical enough to follow and specific enough to reassess. Discuss when the area or your overall risk will be reviewed so filling a tooth becomes part of a broader plan to reduce future disease.
