Good care includes an informed conversation

Participating in dental care means understanding what is being proposed and having room to ask questions. The ADA's ethical guidance emphasizes patient involvement and confidentiality. This overview describes constructive expectations for the conversation; specific legal rights and office policies depend on the applicable rules and circumstances.

GREENWICH POINT DENTAL

Ask for the reasons and choices

A treatment discussion should explain the problem, proposed approach, likely benefits, relevant risks, and reasonable alternatives, including what may happen without treatment. Ask the dentist to show or describe the findings in a way you understand. Consent is a conversation, not merely a signature. If a term is unfamiliar or you need time to consider a decision, say so before treatment begins.

Clarify practical expectations

Ask about the proposed sequence, estimates, follow-up, and who to contact with a concern. You may request information about records access and the practice's privacy procedures. If you want a family member involved, explain the role you would like that person to have. Do not assume a companion automatically receives every detail or makes decisions for you; discuss your preferences with the team.

Contribute accurate information

Share medications, allergies, relevant medical changes, and previous treatment experiences. Let the office know about symptoms, difficulties following instructions, or barriers to attending appointments. Ask for clarification when a recommendation does not fit your understanding. If you choose to defer or decline treatment, discuss the possible consequences and a monitoring plan where appropriate so your decision and next steps are clear to everyone involved.

GOOD QUESTIONS

A little more clarity.

Can I ask for another explanation or a second opinion?

Yes. You can ask questions and discuss obtaining another opinion before deciding. Ask how relevant records can be shared and whether the clinical situation makes delay a concern.
