A preventive option worth an individual look

Sealants are often associated with children, but some adults may also benefit. The question is whether a particular chewing surface is a good candidate, given its grooves, condition, and your cavity risk. A sealant is a targeted preventive measure rather than a coating every adult automatically needs.

GREENWICH POINT DENTAL

Consider the surface and your risk

A sealant forms a protective layer over pits and grooves on a tooth's chewing surface. The dentist must first assess whether the area is suitable and whether decay needs a different approach. Mention recent cavities, difficulty reaching back teeth, or changes in your health or routine. Ask why the specific tooth is being considered and what benefit is expected in your case.

Understand the appointment

Placement generally involves cleaning and preparing the surface, applying the material, and checking the result. Ask what you will feel, whether any other treatment is needed first, and how the team will confirm your bite is comfortable. If an existing restoration occupies the surface, the recommendation may differ. The practical aim is to protect an appropriate area while avoiding treatment that does not address your actual risk.

Keep the rest of prevention in place

A sealed chewing surface does not protect every part of a tooth. Continue the cleaning and fluoride routine recommended for you, including attention between teeth. Sealants need periodic inspection and may need repair or replacement when worn or lost. If a tooth becomes sensitive or traps food, arrange assessment rather than assuming the sealant rules out a new problem.

GOOD QUESTIONS

A little more clarity.

Am I too old to ask about sealants?

Age alone is not the deciding factor. Ask whether any of your unsealed surfaces would benefit and how the recommendation compares with other ways to reduce your cavity risk.
